"Kirlia!" {Oh! Lucky.} Mint huffed a bit and brushed herself off. "La kir kirla la." {I'm not finished, yet.}
Kimiko decided that, if looks could kill, Pikachu would not be fighting now, and so wouldn't her Kirlia. "Mint, Confusion, again!" The trainer then racked her mind for something to change up the battle a bit, maybe use Mint's moves in a different way, if possible.

Perhaps Kimiko would have been better off wracking her brain for new ideas before she made her next call; it worked before, so pikachu launches forward again, and with a lighting fast burst of speed rushes in using quick attack.
The difference between this time and last time, however, was distance. Pikachu was inches- no, centimeters away from a collision with Mint when a wave of confusion picks it up off its feet; from close range, its tossed back quite a distance, and with a heavy "thud" smacks into a distant tree and slumps, its consciousness leaving.

Kimiko stopped racking her mind for more creative ways to defeat the Pikachu, seeing how it has already fainted against that tree over there. "Good job Mint!" The girl kneel down to give the Kirlia a well deserved high-five.
"Kir la!" Mint gave the unconscious rodent a look. She did a hair flip that seemed to say 'teaches you not to mess with me, dearie.'
"So, how are you doing on those fossils, Dirk?" Kimiko rose, turning herself to the archaeologist.

"Hm? Almost got it." He seems so intent and exhilarated by what he's doing, he didn't catch your battle at all. His eyes never leave the growing hole in the ground as rhyhorn digs, slowly unearthing a sandy-brown hard rock.
Just then, something glints at the edge of your field of vision. A second look reveals something reflecting sunlight on one of the petrified trees.

Kimiko turned her head and squinted her eyes to try and get a better look at the glinting object. Is it a Pokemon? An object of some rarity? What is it? She walked near the tree with the object, hoping that she would be able to figure out what it looks like.

Hm... maybe not as exciting as you'd hoped. It looks like hardened tree sap, several large globs caught in time along the side of the tree, amber in color and in name. But one glob in particular catches your sight-- in the center is a small, mysterious organism, only barely discernible.
The digging sounds from rhyhorn suddenly stopped-- it was finished. Dirk glanced up from the hole in the ground and caught sight of the girl examining the tree. "Hey! Kimiko! What is that? Can you bring it here?"

"Uh, sure Dirk." Kimiko evaluated the distance from the ground up to the tree and decided that Mint's Confusion would be able to reach that high. "Mint, could you carefully take that amber-colored thing from out of that petrified tree with your Confusion? Waaay up there." The trainer pointed at the mysterious object.
"Kir~~~" The Kirlia started to hone in on the amber.

The amber glows blue, and with a heavy tug is ripped off the tree and lowered into your hands.
Dirk, his curiosity getting the better of him, approached you in the meantime, peeking into your hands. "Is that...?"
He reaches down and takes the amber, holding it into the light and looking through it. "My God... that's really something." he says, a hint of awe in his voice. "The remains of an ancient pokemon were trapped in the resins secreted by the tree, and hardened over time. Kimiko, we have with us now something that could easily be tens of millions of years old!"
He stares at it with wide eyes, looking more thrilled than you;ve ever seen him. "Can I... do you mind if I hang on to this?"

Kimiko beamed. It's not everyday that you'd help out with fossil hunting and actually find something. The amber... it's not really something that compels Kimiko to actually want to keep it around. It seems to give great joy to Dirk, though. Perhaps it's better off left with him.
"Ah, you can keep it if you wish. I don't mind."

"Ha! Yes! Thank you!"
Dirk stows the piece of old amber in his coat, certain to keep it safe. This was his own piece of history the scientists would never know to take from him! He felt a joyous warmth with his new amber-- or maybe that was just the amber still being warm from sitting in the sun.
"Well," Dirk says, straightening himself up a bit, "We found some fossils in the ground... but nothing new, unfortunately. I'll still have to take them back..."
He gives Kimiko a genuine grin, and holds out his hand to shake. "It was great working with you. Really. Don't be afraid to tag along again sometime again.
...And, if you happen to be going anywhere interesting... don't be afraid to bring me on for the ride."

Kimiko returned the grin and gripped his hand for a hearty shake. "I am glad to be of some help to you, Dirk. " She let go and jumped up with enthusiasm. "Today was great! A true adventure! Exciting! Awesomeness!" Mint couldn't help but jump for joy with her trainer as well.
Kimiko settled down a bit after that. "And, trust me I won't be afraid to tag along again."
