Ahh... the smell of stone and grass wafts through the air under the midday sun at Pewter City. Yes, the sun is shining, birds are chirping; it's the height of spring, a season of birth and renewal. And for trainers who make their stop in this fine city, the perfect place to begin an adventure!

"Okay... Pewter City... just where the heck is that supposed to be?"
It wasn't so much that Alex hadn't heard of the city; no, anyone with any interest in fossils and ancient Pokemon knew of the museum that the city maintained at its boundaries. But when it came to directions, the boy was an absolutely hopeless case. He'd wandered into the forests of Celadon and now, here he was, his nose buried futilely in a map as he tried to discern just how far his fifteen day trek had taken him, now that he stood in a pristine park with a large sign with 'Welcome to Pewter City!' etched into it in front of him.
Defeated, he folded the map and stuffed it into one of the worn pockets of his jacket. To him, the map consisted of nothing but useless lines and squiggles, something he couldn't make heads or tails out of. He wasn't certain if he'd gone north, south east or west, and try as he might, he couldn't even find Celadon on the map. Perhaps he should've 'invested' in a map that had pictures on it.
His motion stirred something inside his jacket, and Alex unzipped it partially to let two large ears poke out. ~Chu, Pichu...~ the little yellow Pokemon murred as he yawned, rubbing his eyes with tiny paws. "Oh, hey... Sparky," Alex said after a bit of hesitation. Not only was he a bit ashamed at having given his new friend such a ridiculously obvious name, but he was still rather uncomfortable with having a Pokemon to begin with. "I didn't wake you up, did I?"
The Pichu shook his head before crawling out of Alex's jacket to perch on his shoulder, yawning again before looking around. There were many people walking along the cobblestone paths that laid out the park they were in, but Alex's spot was particular secluded. No one looked at them, no one noticed them. Sparky sighed with relief.
"Well, buddy. I think we're kinda lost, but that's okay. The more we're lost, the less likely they're gonna find us." Alex shivered at the thought. "I think we should find some food or something then keep moving... though... I should probably find out where we are first...."

Dirk Illinois casually strode through the park, his sight set on the fossil museum ahead. With the sun it was a great day to get out, uncover some hidden artifacts, and make some ends meet. His brimmed hat kept a mysterious shade over his eyes, his mouth a perpetually stoic little line. He furtively glanced around, taking in the passerby who walked obliviously through the park.
One stranger in particular caught his interest.
Ahead he saw a young kid... judging by his height, probably 12 or 13. What struck Dirk about this particular fellow was his ragged clothes, beaten appearance; Dirk felt a deep connection bubbling up, as if he'd met a fellow adventurer, a kindred spirit who boldly went wherever adventure called, and didn't give a d**n if his clothes were clean or not!
The adventurous archaeologist approached the kid silently, though the kid's back was partially turned to him. "Hey." he said plainly, talking down to the stranger. "My name's Dirk... who might you be?"

In a situation such as the one Alex was suddenly thrust into, there were a few possible venues he could take. He could have bolted immediately. He could have tried his best to disable the stranger. He could have begged for forgiveness. But as his gut tightened, Alex tried his best to restrain his fear. It was possible that this stranger who'd snuck on him so quiet and efficiently wasn't even related to Geo. The boy turned and in the act of lowering his eyes did a quick scan and analysis. Geo's subordinates weren't usually dressed so ruggedly. They dealt in urban scenarios; this guy was more outdoorsy. The chance that he was with Geo was rather minute.
Of course, this thought process only took about a second.
"Um... I'm... Alex," he said after a nanosecond of hesitation, during which another onslaught of thoughts rushed through his head weighing the risks of giving out his name. Of course, without giving his last name, they wouldn't know if he were the Alex or just another Alex, but then that would decree the chance of taking such a risk.... "Um... and this is Sparky."
The Pichu had jumped to Alex's other shoulder and was now tentatively holding on to the boy's ear as he tried to make himself invisible. Humans that snuck up so silently were bad news, and Sparky immediately distrusted this man. "Don't... um... mind him, sir... he doesn't really like people that much...."

Dirk scratched his chin, leaning back ever so slightly. This kid was maybe just a little nervous. "Sorry to startle you." Dirk grunted, looking aside suspiciously. "I just wanted to say hi... I see young thirteen year olds like you hanging around and I just get a little curious, you know? You remind me of me when I was your age..."
Though after a brief glance at the cowering pichu, he adds "...sort of."

"Well... um... actually... I'm fifteen, sir..." It didn't bother him; people often times mistook him as being younger. It was surprisingly advantageous in many instances. Alex reached up and scratched Sparky lightly across the top of his head with one finger. The little mouse squeeked with delightly and closed his eyes. "I found out a couple of days ago that he really likes his head being touched. It calms him down."
Alex glanced at the man. He seemed to be fairly harmless. "Um... can I ask you a question? I'm kinda lost... you know how far Pewter City is from Celadon City? I'm not really used to reading maps, and... well... yeah, I'm just lost."

"Lost?" Dirk raised his hand to give this kid a big pat on the shoulder.
But on second thought, decided not to and awkwardly just put his hand back down.
"You've come to right guy." His eyes seemed to light up a little. "You said you came here through the thick forest between here and Celadon, right? That's a long trek! You've come a solid third of the way across Kanto, albeit in a straight line."
He crossed his arms, standing somewhat heroically. "I know this region pretty well. Where are you headed now?"

"A third of the way?" Alex smiled, despite himself. This was very good news. And if he could get a guide to lead him, maybe he could even get further. "Well, um... I'm not really sure where I'm going. I've never been outside Celadon in my life, 'cept for some of the small towns around it and Saffron..."
Another shiver went through him. He hated Saffron City with a passion. There was something wrong with that city; he could feel it. Alex could only hope that his detestation for the city wasn't showing in his expression. After all, what if this guy was from that area? That wouldn't bode well to piss off a potential acquaintance or even...
"So, um... Mr. Dirk was it? You think you could... I'unno... show me around here? I promise I won't get in your way, and..." Alex looked down to hide his frown. There was a certain risk he was about to take, and he wasn't certain if it'd be worth it. He shook his head, clearing the thought. "I'll pay you back for it with something real nice if you do..."

Another shiver went through him. He hated Saffron City with a passion. There was something wrong with that city; he could feel it. Alex could only hope that his detestation for the city wasn't showing in his expression. It wasn't obvious, but Dirk, observant as he was, caught the slightest twitch from the kid, and understood it to be some hidden hatred. But Dirk chose not to ask about it.
"So, um... Mr. Dirk was it? You think you could... I'unno... show me around here? I promise I won't get in your way, and..." Alex looked down to hide his frown. There was a certain risk he was about to take, and he wasn't certain if it'd be worth it. He shook his head, clearing the thought. "I'll pay you back for it with something real nice if you do..." Again Dirk's eyes lit up, and the faintest of smiles grew on him. "Sure, I'll take you around somewhere. Just give me a few days, I have some business to take care of, and we can go wherever you like." His gaze rose over the horizon, to distant hills and mountains, skies and fields. There were still infinite discoveries to be made out there, and Dirk could feel them all calling to him, waiting to be explored.
And getting something in return sounded like a pretty good deal, too, though deep down Dirk doubted he'd get anything good out of this. He looked back down at the kid. "You've never been to the Pewter Museum either, right? I'm on my way there now... you're welcome to come, if you'd like."

Vei looked around. This was just about the driest place he could find. It was rugged and stony... two things he was unfamiliar with. At least the sky was around.
He glanced at the map he picked up from a Pokemon Center. "Pewter City..." He imagined the famous museum of Pewter, and the various fossils displayed in it. For a brief moment he lost himself with bones flying around and forming an Aerodactyl. "Uhm," he said to himself, "that kind of thing just doesn't happen." As he ambled onward, he stared upward at the sky.
"Hey, Azure. What do you think of this region?"
The Totodile uttered a few pleased growls before frantically jumping and growling as...
"Oof!" Vei managed as he stumbled backward. He ran into a much taller man with a hat. "I'm sorry, sir."

Dirk had resumed his walk toward the Pewter museum shortly after announcing it to Alex, his eyes not leaving the pristine white building, when a daydreaming boy suddenly walked right into him.
"Huh?"
Dirk stumbled a bit, quickly turning to face the short teen who'd bumped into him.
"I'm sorry, sir," the teen said, looking up at him. But it hardly came out as serious; it was drifting, as if in a daze.
Dirk stared at the kid for an awkward bit, trying to size him up. No matter how he looked at it, Dirk felt something deeper about this kid; something latent, below the surface. And the pokemon archaeologist couldn't pass up the chance to explore it.
"...My name," Dirk said, a bit monotonous, "Is Dirk. Who are you?"

Kimiko was skipping happily down the street, her dark hair flowing up and down in rhythm with her movements. She was in a rather bright mood today, and she was going to explore some more of Pewter City before she goes off to somewhere else.
While on her way skipping, she spotted a few guys. One of them looked familiar, the other two were new to her. The one that was familiar, she met a few days ago, and was much taller than those two that was each a few inches taller than her.
'Wow, I'm reeaally short.'
She decided to be nice and say hi, maybe make a few friends. "Hello! My name is Kimiko!" She waved at the taller fellow. "Hi Dirk."

"...My name," Dirk said, a bit monotonous, "Is Dirk. Who are you?"
'Hmm...' Vei thought. 'I should probably look in front of me more...'
He looked up to the man named Dirk and blinked. "Vei." He peered beyond Dirk and saw a boy about his height. "I'm sorry. Did I interrupt something important?" He sensed a bit of apprehension about that boy, but decided not to pursue it too deeply.
Instead, Vei glanced at the taller man. He was quite tall, with rugged features and clothing with about the same quality.
Vei's mind drifted. 'I wonder what's in the museum...'

To Kimiko, this Vei guy seemed like boy with his head somewhere on a cloud. She glanced him over a bit, noticing his unkempt hair, thin body. She didn't quite see what color his eyes were. But he seemed pretty cute. Kimiko chuckled at the animated Totodile at his side.
She noticed the the boy was deep in thought. "Vei...? What are you thinking about?" The girl was curious.

"Vei...? What are you thinking about?"
"...eh?" He began. Vei turned to the origin of the female voice, unsure of what to expect. As his gray eyes trailed, they came upon the pendant hanging from the girl's neck. "Ah... that museum I heard of."
Azure believed there to be little to do, so he brought it upon himself to sit against Vei's leg.
'That's a pretty necklace,' he thought, scratching his head. 'Hmm.. I don't think I know her...'
"I'm sorry. Have we met before?"
