When Poliwag are born, they have a very thin skin, when they get older their skin still stays thin, but becomes very durable like elastic, one of the most thin areas of its skin is on the stomach area, where it is so thin you can see its large intenstines, which make up the spiral pattern.
Since this pokémon is an amphibian it prefers to dwell in shallow waters, like swamps and small rivers. It can walk on land, though not very well, but needs to stay near the water to keep its skin moist.

THE FOOTPRINT OF A POLIWAG Poliwag are pretty common in the Kanto and Johto regions, and non-existant in the Hoenn and Orre regions.
Starting with Kanto, you can find them in Pallet Town, Virdian City, Fuscia City, Four Island, Berry Forest, Cape Brink, The first floor, and the first basement level of Cerulean Cave, the Icefall Cave entrance, Ruin Valley, and in many areas of the Safari Zone, Routes 6, 16 17, 22, 23, 25 & 28. Moving onto Johto, The Ruins of Alph, Ilex Forest, Ecruteak City, Violet City, Mt. Silver, and Blackthorn City, Routes 30, 31, 35, 43 & 44.
Since Poliwag rarely come on land, the best way to catch one would be by fishing.
