Chapter 30
--------------------------------------------------
There was silence. Everything was totally quiet. You could have heard a pin fall onto the soft, moist grassy floor of the flat peak on Mt. Pyre if you had been there seconds after Banov’s team launched their final blast. Actually, a trainer who had a particular fondness for sewing happened to have a needle with them, and they did happen to drop it. The sound stirred some from their odd silence, and heads began turning to look at each other.
“Is…is it over?”
As if to answer the question, a powerful, enormous blast of heat and fire erupted from one end of the mountain, a man coming from the explosion… although, standing tall and proud he seemed to be more than a man, like a powerful god, looking down with anger upon the foolish mortals who had dared to challenge him. The ferocious demon dog houndoom at his side looked like an adorable, huggable teddy bear next to the blazing anger of his master.
Opposite him a blast of cool, harsh ice and water erupted, a tall, powerful man emerging with a furious-looking pokemon in a large, thick blue hovering shell, cloyster, although the man it followed seemed to be much more powerful than it with his hard, cold expression, which would have killed the soul of any man or woman who dared to look into those eyes. One of the loose trainers in the background had the unfortunate luck of meeting eyes with him, which resulted in him immediately collapsing and being taken to a hospital in Lilycove. It’s unknown if they were able to return his soul.
Even Banov couldn’t find the ability to speak. He broke out in a terrible cold sweat. He tried to make a sound but all that came out was an odd annoying screech.
“Ha!” Dave laughed, “The amazing Banov scared into silence. Truly a rare spectacle!”
With a devilish grin he added, “Maybe now is the time I take my sweet, sweet revenge for those burns you inflicted on me inside the crater of Mt. Ember!!”
“Quiet. He is mine.”
The voice that said this was almost demonic. Upon hearing this Banov had the odd feeling that all of his limbs had just been torn off. Slowly and painfully. Even Dave was brought to heel, backing away and breaking out in a similar cold sweat.
“That blast of yours may have defeated our weaker pokemon, but with us now are our strongest. Even if you come at us with all six of your pathetic pokemon you’ll fall instantly.”
“We’ll see about that!” Banov attempted to yell. This thought didn’t leave the stage of being planned in his mind, but his body still moved, releasing his full arsenal of pokemon. Unfortunately, the majority of them were weakened and fatigued from the last attack, many on the brink of fainting, not to mention the fact that they were all intimidated by their opponents.
Banov opened his mouth to give a command, and for a moment nothing came out. Finally, in a forced whisper he said “Blaziken… use… fire…. punch….”
Blaziken was paralyzed in fear however. Banov realized that in order to command his pokemon, he would have to be confident and strong. He tried again, is voice now at a low conversation level “Use… fire punch.”
No result. Banov swallowed, clenched his fists, and put all of his energy into his lungs, yelling as loud as he could. The result wasn’t an insane shout, but it was certainly close enough to his normal level for command.
“Blaziken, use fire punch!”
Blaziken felt the soft hint of confidence in Banov’s voice, and front hat he too drew some bravery. With a loud battle cry to charged into houndoom, its fists surging with fiery power.
“Blazikenn!!”
The bird humanoid thrust its arm forward. The houndoom, without a command roared back as the fist approached. Suddenly all confidence was blasted away from blaziken, the fire disappearing immediately. Its hand suddenly felt frozen, as it continued to scream towards the houndoom. Houndoom braced itself for the light blow, and with another enormous roar it blasted away blaziken in an explosion of fire, its explosive strength contradicting blaziken’s weaker force.
Blaziken continued to fly through the air, passing beyond Banov and his pokemon, and almost tumbling down the mountain. If not for the demonic presence one may have found the distance almost humorous.
“That’s enough!” came a voice, so confident it was almost as if it was from another world. Bob pushed in between Banov and his pokemon, with Rei following close behind.
“Your pokemon are too weak to fight now.” Rei said, in an amazingly calm tone; “Maxie and Archie are focusing all of their evil energy towards you too, so it’s got to be hard enough commanding your pokemon.”
The two trainers turned to face the leaders if magma and aqua; “All we did was use sandstorm, so we’re in prime form to battle” Bob said.
“We’ll take it from here.” Rei said, beckoning tyranitar and flygon to follow them.
“So… you plan to fight us?” Maxie said, his force re-focusing at the two trainers; “You’ve got a lot of nerve.”
Rei and Bob were shaken, but this time their evil focus was divided between two so overall it was weaker. Bob stuttered; “W-We can take you! Me and Rei have been partners for a few years now, we’re strong fighting together!”
“Ah, yes.” Archie calmly said, “You once worked for me, didn’t you? Now maybe it’s time I repaid you two for betraying me.”
Bob and Rei looked to each other and nodded, their two pokemon who were already out stepping forward.
“Sandstorm!” was the command they yelled in unison, beginning the battle.
Both pokemon gave a loud roar and two massive sandstorms began swirling up from the ground, meeting where Bob and Rei’s enemies stood and pelting them with an enormous attack. The other trainers, their pokemon as banged-up as Banov’s, watched in awe.
Eventually the two sandstorms cleared. Maxie and houndoom were incased in a shield of glass, formed by houndoom’s exceedingly hot fire attack hardening the sand just as Banov’s tea had done earlier. He fancied the idea and decided to steal the move for himself once he killed Banov. In Archie’s place was only a large blue shell, which opened to reveal Archie curled up inside. He rolled out and cloister leaped back into the air.
“Houndoom, rapid fire!”
Houndoom began and swinging its head around wildly, releasing numerous small fireballs. They zoomed past Bob and Rei, tyranitar and flygon, in-between them and around them, but none seemed to actually hit anything.
“Uh…” Rei said, watching the fire zoom by, “…you missed…badly…”
Her sarcastic remark was interrupted as she saw a gigantic column of water rising from inside the mountain, towering high above everyone. It peaked and came crashing down in the form of a giant wave, formed by cloister.
“Run!” Bob shouted, leaping to the side; only to be smacked in the shoulder by a fireball.
“Ow!” He cried, Rei and the pokemon following him into the path of the fireballs.
“Oh!” Rei gasped; “The fireballs were only there to cover out escape!”
They were forced back in-between the fireballs, squeezed into a little area so that the wave smashed down on all 4 at once. The water washed away, to reveal Bob and Rei still standing, although their pokemon were not.
“He’s really good…” Bob said, “To have focused his power on the pokemon, and not us.”
“We want to prove to you how strong we are.” Archie said in reply; before pausing and adding; “Two down, by the way.”
At this point both leaders were so overcome in bloodlust and power that they did honestly wish to battle rather than just finish the opposing trainers. They were too confident of their power to even think of losing!
Bob and Rei angrily released their next two pokemon; from Bob came noctowl and from Rei espeon.
“Get ready!” Maxie yelled, as his houndoom released a flurry of fireballs just as before.
“We won’t fall for the same trick twice!” Rei yelled, charging forward; “If you gave us covered from the sides, the only way to go is forward!”
Bob followed quickly, noctowl zooming past him. Together, espeon and noctowl smashed into cloister head-first then blasted it back with their combined psychic powers. Cloyster seemed damaged for a moment, before recovering and snarling, returning fire with a wave of cold air which was so cold it created frost on espeon’s fur and noctowl’s feathers; so cold it hurt ((icy wind)) Taking advantage of the distraction, houndoom leapt forward, biting into espeon.
It overdid it, its wrath seething through its teeth and crushing espeon’s shoulder. As it backed away espeon’s shoulder was revealed to be bathed in blood. The little kitty screamed in pain. Rei, her eyes in tears for espeon leapt into the fray grabbing up espeon before houndoom followed his bite with a wave of fire which swept over Rei and espeon.
Both sides backed away. Ice formed on noctowl’s wings, bringing it down. Bob and Rei were forced to retrieve both pokemon.
“Four down.” Maxie said with a sneer.
Rei, angry now because of espeon’s condition and his continued snideness angrily released her third pokemon, her swamp-creature marshtomp while Bob released quilava. The two pokemon, upon being released let out a deep sigh as their forms changed and grew, until they had both evolved; Marshtomp was now swampert, now rather big, while quilava was now the tall typhlosion, standing on two legs.
“So, fighting fire with fire and water with water?” Archie asked, grinning.
“You’ve got the idea.” Bob said, grinning as battle swept over him, not to mention the pride of a pokemon evolution.
The two trainers rushed in, their new pokemon following.
“Typhlosion, thunderpunch that cloyster!”
“Swampert, release a muddy water attack on houndoom!”
“Cloyster, counter with ice beam!”
“Take it, rush in and bite it, houndoom!”
Typhlosion lead the collision with a swift punch to cloister, but before the hit landed it was pushed back by an ice beam. Swampert leapt over its partner, gushing water downward as it leapt up and propelling a power stream of mud to houndoom, who rushed through the blast, leaping into the air and crunching its teeth into swampert’s thick skin.
Swampert fell out of the sky, barely missing Typhlosion as the pokemon blasted away the ice beam with a powerful ray of fire. Typhlosion smacked houndoom off swampert with a strong punch before combining a flamethrower with swampert’s hydro pump. The resulting powerful beam blasted away both houndoom and cloyster, although cloyster, especially resistant to both attacks pushed back the pokemon with a powerful spike cannon.
Spikes were flung through the air from cloyster, sinking deep into both opposing pokemon’s limbs. Cloyster and houndoom huddled close together while Typhlosion and swampert huddled together opposite, both sides tending to each other’s wounds.
With a nod houndoom and cloyster charged together, fire and water swirling around the two. They passed in between Typhlosion and swampert before both pokemon were blasted up by a sudden explosion of fire and water together. As the two tumbled back down to the hard ground houndoom and cloyster followed under them, finishing them off by combining waves of spike cannon and a fire blast.
They had fainted before they reached the ground, immediately sucking back into Rei and Bob’s pokeballs.
“Six down!” Archie sneered.
“Shut up!!” Bob shouted, releasing blastoise.
Rei released absol. Her usually calm face was twisted in anger, because of her harmed pokemon but also because of Maxie and Archie’s supreme thingyiness. She hated it when people got extremely thingyy!!
“Bob!” She said, “Cover me!”
“You got it!” Bob said, happy to take his anger out by charging forward with blastoise while Rei hung back.
“Absol, keep using swords dance until you can’t anymore, then increase your speed with agility!”
As absol’s claws and legs slowly grew to ridiculous sizes, Blastoise managed to successfully fend off both houndoom and cloyster with well-placed hydro pumps.
“One pokemon isn’t enough to hold us!” Maxie yelled.
“Blastoise, yawn!”
As houndoom and cloyster charged in for a supreme blow blastoise let out a deep, sleepy yawn which just dampened their spirit and made them woozy…. Suddenly houndoom and cloyster couldn’t keep their eyes open. Blastoise took advantage of this weakness, firing a full-power hydro pump into the duo, blasting them back.
Now, both Maxie and Archie’s pokemon had taken pretty severe beatings by now. One may wonder how they were still up; the truth is, both pokemon at this pint were driven forward only by their master’s bloodlust, and total need to complete their mission. Brutally loyal to their masters, houndoom and cloyster over came blastoise’s yawn and rushed forward again, this time blasting right through blastoise, knocking it out in the process.
As they charged towards what used to be a medium-sized dog they were stopped in their tracks by a white dog with long legs and giant claws and fangs, each of which as big as absol’s head; its head-scythe now twice the size of its head.
“ABSOLL!!”
The dog rushed forward, swinging its massive scythe s if insane. Houndoom and cloyster, encountering a force like this were forced to leap back, as the ground opened up in massive cracks wherever absol swung its head.
As they backed away they fired flamethrowers and ice beams, pounding the behemoth but not taking it down successfully… the random flailing of its head scythe also served to successfully deflect most attacks given the scythe’s size. With a roar absol brought its 6 massive fronts claws down on the duo, give each 3 deep, huge cuts down their body. Booth pokemon shook in place before strengthening with resolve and leaping forward; if long-range wouldn’t cut then they would risk some wounds and take this thing on head-on.
There was some random flailing and thrashing as the three pokemon became large zooming blurs, and finally in an explosion of fire and ice houndoom and cloyster rushed forward, leaving absol to drop onto the floor, covered in cuts, bruises, and other nasty marks.
At this point houndoom and cloyster were pretty well damaged, but their eyes still glowed with energy like they were only just starting. Their spirits had transcended their bodies.
Bob and Rei broke out in a cold sweat. Both were down to just one pokemon, and houndoom and cloyster showed no signs of slowing down.
“We need a plan.” Rei said, taking her final pokeball off her belt.
“Have one in mind?” Bob asked.
“Yeah.”
***
With a nod, Bob rushed forward, running straight at Archie as Rei released her beautiful gardevoir.
“YAHH!”
Her reached into his pocket as he charged, pulling out two smoke bombs.
“Oh!” Maxie realized; “How primitive. He plans to charge forward and use himself as a decoy, then that gardevoir will come from behind and attack me directly. Well I won’t fall for it!”
Bob slapped the smoke bombs down, a thick black cloud shrouding over the battlefield. Maxie remained cool and collected, waiting for the attack.
“Ha!” Bob leapt forward from the smoke his fist narrowly missing Maxie’s face.
“Fool!” he shouted, “Think I wouldn’t fall for that?”
He smacked Bob back before he and houndoom turned around, catching another humanoid figure as it attempted to get him from behind.
To his surprise, Bob had attacked from behind too.
“Wh-what?” Maxie gasped, “Wait… but, you were supposed to charge forward then have the pokemon attack from behind! How are there two of you?”
From behind him (which had previously been forward), he heard Bob sneer; “Silly Maxie: I’m the pokemon!”
Before Maxie could react, a purple blob latched another houndoom’s snout, wrapping around it. Houndoom could not bite nor shoot flames at it NOR reach it with its legs. Ditto was untouchable.
“How, ditto, finish it.” Bob said, a grin spreading across his face and he neared the houndoom that held him hostage moments ago. Ditto crunched in, snapping houndoom’s jaw. It successfully broke houndoom’s jaw, meaning it could no longer bite or shoot any fire from its mouth.
The smoke soon cleared, revealing houndoom writhing in pain on the ground, with Bob and ditto staring down a defeated Maxie. Archie gasped. With Maxie he could do some amazing things, but alone he couldn’t fen doff these two high-caliber trainers!
With a sigh, he hung his head. His sudden lack of willpower killed cloyster’s battle will, and without that the pokemon instantly fainted.
It was… over. There was a long, silent pause before everyone jumped and cheered, yelling at the top of their lungs. It was over. Magma and Aqua were ended.
Ro so everyone thought. With an enraged yell Dave shoved through everyone, grabbing the two orbs and releasing charizard as he zoomed off the mountain.
“You’ll pay for this!!” he yelled back, “All of you!! I guarantee it!!”
“No.” Rei said, running to Banov.
“Here take these, all of my healing items. Heal your pokemon and go!”
Banov gave a weak nod, accepting items from many followers. His entire team was restored in moments, and without a word he released aerodactyl, zooming after Dave and pursuing him across the sea that divided Mt Pyre from the southern edge of the Gulf of Hoen. There was still one more trainer to beat.
