As you roleplay more, you might naturally want to expand your team. At most, a trainer can have 6 pokemon on hand. All pokemon you own must be recorded in your profile, including those not on hand. Your profile must be up to date with what pokemon you have on hand and which you do not, and if any pokemon of yours is in battle it must remain on hand for the duration of the battle.
Selecting a pokemon:
In order a catch a pokemon, first you must select the pokemon you wish to catch.
It is possible to catch an evolved pokemon, but only in special cases. If the pokemon in questions has only two different stages of evolution, like Snorlax, Primeape, Scizor, etc, then they must be caught at their earlier stage evolution.
For pokemon with 3 stages of evolution, however, such as the starters, Gengar, Golem, Machamp, Alakazam, etc, you are allowed to capture them at their second stage of evolution, if wanted. It is still possible to catch pokemon at a lower stage of evolution if such is preferred.
However, if the 3-stage pokemon in question does not reach its second stage before level 30, they must start at their earliest stage of evolution.
There are some special cases in which a pokemon evolves in the game by specific requirements such as trade with an item or level-up with a certain attack. For these cases, look at the separate 'Evolution Guide' to decide whether or not it is available for capture.
Aside from these rules of evolution, any line of pokemon may be caught except for the following:
Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Mewtwo, Mew, Raikou, Entei, Suicune, Lugia, Ho-Oh, Celebi, Regirock, Regice, Registeel, Latias, Latios, Kyogre, Groudon, Rayquaza, Jirachi, Deoxys (Any form), Yuxie, Emurit, Agnome, Dialga, Palkia, Heatran, Regigigas, Giratina, Crecelia, Phione, Manaphy, Darkrai, Sheimi, Arseus
Capturing Process
Capturing a pokemon is surprisingly simple; if it meets the requirements, you must simply begin a new roleplay topic in the desired location, and you must then roleplay finding it and capturing it. Unless otherwise stated, topics devoted to the capture of new pokemon are private. Because there are no mods or Dungeon Masters, there is some honor system involved; no "cop-outs!" Capturing a pokemon is a difficult and trying process and must be approached with skill and ability in order to be successful.
When actually engaging the pokemon, you are allowed to simply roleplay the battle yourself without any interference with a judge or third party. However, if you wish, you may ask for a judge and a second player to play the role of the desired pokemon for a more thrilling battle, in which case the fight must be posted within the topic devoted to capture.
Only pokeballs are used to capture pokemon, but every trainer has an implied unlimited supply of them on hand. Don't worry about purchasing more or running out.
Fossil Pokemon:
Because fossil pokemon do not exist in the wild, you must instead find the correct fossil and then revive it in another topic later on. There are 3 locations at which a pokemon fossil my be restored to a full pokemon;
1) Via a scientist on Cinnibar Island, Kanto
2) Via a scientist in the Devon Corp. building in Rustboro City, Hoenn, or...
3) Via a scientist in the Oreburgh Mining Mueseum in Oreburgh City, Sinnoh
