As you roleplay here, you'll be faced with many battles. While often these will be against wild pokemon, you might have to face other players, too. You are required to keep track of your Wins, Losses and Draws against other players in your profile topic. This should be kept in W/L/D format.
Battles will most often be held at the forums. There are the two participants and the 'Judge.' In the case of a player fighting an NPC or wild pokemon, the 'Judge' controls the opponent or you may try and find somebody else willing to play the role. You can look for active judges or volunteer to be one in this topic.
The judge will start a new topic specifically for the battle; they must in include in the first post a description of the arena and conditions of the fight. Before the fight officially begins the judge must recieve a private emssage from each trainer describing A) The trainer's name, B) The pokemon they are using and each participating pokemon's level, and C) the attacks that pokemon will be using during the fight. In the case of wild pokemon, they will be treated as level 1 and with full access to any move they can use at level 1. Once the information has been received, the fight can officially begin.
Battles consist of multiple rounds. Each round, the trainer PMs the judge with their command and a description of the attack. When the judge has received both PMs, s/he will make a post in the topic that 1) quotes both commands and 2) describes their outcome, followed by a description of each pokemon's health and position. The judge is the only one to post, and the topic will just be a string of posts that describe the unfolding fight.
A typical fight might last 4 or 5 rounds.
Alternatively, a battle might take place through the use of AOL Instant Messenger. In this case, a chatroom with the judge and all participants as well as spectators takes the place of a forum topic, though the judge is still the only one allowed to send instant messages in most cases. Rather than private messages, each trainer stays in contact with the judge via a private chat. After an AIM fight is complete, the judge must create a topic with the full chat log pasted so that the fight is on record-- and open for anyone else to enjoy.
Respect the judges!
Example Forum Battle:
Here is what a round in a forum battle might look like.
Joe vs. Rebecca, round 2!
The yellow mouse gave a hesitant nod as he raised his tail, flashing with yellow sparks before launching a massive ray of lighting at its foe.
With a chipper grunt the grass dino sent green vines whipping at pikachu, binding it and throwing it towards the nearby lake.
Pikachu's the first to strike, letting loose a thunderbolt that flies through the air at an unsuspecting foe! Bulbasaur retaliates by sending its vines through the air. Unfortunately, the vines act as a lighting rod; thunderbolt strikes them with a magnificent flash of light, then travels down and gives bulbasaur a good jolt.
Bulbasaur fights to try the vine move again, but find that its muscles spasmodically freeze up; it's now fighting with paralysis. Pikachu easily sidesteps the vines, which begin to retract as the round ends!
Positions:
Both are still facing each other from a distance, a good 20 feet apart.
Health:
Bulbasaur's struggling with some paralysis; it'll have some trouble moving for a little while longer. Its health has taken a heavy blow, as well; it's now at about the same level as pikachu.
Trainers, send me your next attacks!
Example AIM Battle:
Alternatively, his is a full battle that was fought via AIM.
(4:14:03 PM) You have just entered room "chat1169500429171."
Ceiling Dreams (4:14:35 PM): Alright, trainers please send your names, pokemon, their levels, and the moves used in battle.
Ceiling Dreams (4:15:00 PM): While you're at it, give me the description of the battlefield.
Ceiling Dreams (4:15:10 PM): Keep it simple though, I'm not feeling too well.
BanovG2 (4:15:22 PM): Boxing Ring
BanovG2 (4:15:34 PM): A small-ish raised white platform surrounded by rubber ropes
BanovG2 (4:15:46 PM): If a pokemon falls out of the ring even with the rubber ropes,
BanovG2 (4:15:56 PM): the match is just paused and both return to their corners before they come in again
BanovG2 (4:16:06 PM): So, no ringouts
BanovG2 (4:16:21 PM): **
Ceiling Dreams (4:18:15 PM): I'm giving you eight minutes to post each of your moves.
Ceiling Dreams (4:18:27 PM): Exceed that without a proper excuse and I disqualify you.
Ceiling Dreams (4:18:53 PM): If I don't get the information I requested in five minutes, the battle is over before it's even begun.
Ceiling Dreams (4:19:03 PM): *is feeling crabby today = no leeway*
Ceiling Dreams (4:19:42 PM): Alright.
Ceiling Dreams (4:19:52 PM): Trainers ready? Send me those moves!
Ceiling Dreams (4:24:37 PM): Typical fighting types. Joy.
Ceiling Dreams (4:24:53 PM): "Awright, Rage!" Riley cheers from the sideline, "Hang back, wait for a hit, then intercept the next one with Counter! You're faster than that guy, it should be no problem!
Ceiling Dreams (4:25:11 PM): Keep 'im on the run with karate chops after that!"
Ceiling Dreams (4:25:13 PM): Mankey nods, hopping a bit and taking an early hit from the opponent, retaliating in the short interval between blows with a more powerful counter, then stepping in and throwing in karate chop after karate chop,
Ceiling Dreams (4:25:24 PM): aiming to hit a weak point.
Ceiling Dreams (4:25:27 PM): </Riley>
Ceiling Dreams (4:26:03 PM): Bigby ran in using quick attack to close line the mankey before turning around and doing a Force Exert powered Axe kick in the mankeys face then pounding it some more and putting
Ceiling Dreams (4:26:12 PM): it in a lock trying to make it submit and just keeping the mankey unable to attack.*
Ceiling Dreams (4:26:19 PM): </Abel>
Ceiling Dreams (4:26:22 PM): <Judgement>
Ceiling Dreams (4:27:57 PM): The Rioru rushes in for a quick attack, which the mankey eagerly takes and gets knocked back into the corner pole.
Ceiling Dreams (4:28:22 PM): One doesn't get smashed by a quick attack head on and not get some sort of hurt from that.
Ceiling Dreams (4:29:50 PM): Regardless, Mankey rushes in again and gets axe kicked by a force exert.. thankfully it manages to intercept the blow before it could do any paralysing effects.
Ceiling Dreams (4:31:05 PM): Mankey proceeds to throw Rioru by the leg to the side, causing some spectators to wince because the pain was evident in that last attack.
Ceiling Dreams (4:31:14 PM): The round ends there.
Ceiling Dreams (4:31:17 PM): </end Judgement>
Ceiling Dreams (4:31:23 PM): <Positions/Status>
Ceiling Dreams (4:32:47 PM): Rioru and Mankey are about a yard apart, both have gotten back up and are riled up from that round. Mankey has bruises from the back to its right side whilst Rioru has some pain from its side after landing from that counter.
Ceiling Dreams (4:32:51 PM): </end>
Ceiling Dreams (4:32:52 PM): <continue>
Ceiling Dreams (4:39:10 PM): Bigby quickly gets up on the ring corners and waits for the mankey to come at it before it does a Force Exert knee into it's head and then pushed it into the corner.
Ceiling Dreams (4:39:27 PM): Once it was in the corner Bigby grabbed the ropes for leverage and used quick attack to send very very fasts kicks into the mankey.*
Ceiling Dreams (4:39:49 PM): </Abel>
Ceiling Dreams (4:40:04 PM): Rage, let's mix it up a bit! Bounce off the top of the rubber ropes behind you and get above that thing then land a karate chaop to the head from above as you come down!
Ceiling Dreams (4:40:11 PM): Then use you speed to sprint around it and karate chop it again from the back!"
Ceiling Dreams (4:40:26 PM): Mankey nods, leaping backwards up and top of the rubber ropes, then bouncing off them to a fairly god altitude over the canvas. With a pleased snort it drops down straight out of the sky
Ceiling Dreams (4:40:33 PM): brining all its weight down into an arcing chop that cleanly lands on the dob-thing's head. After landing it cuts around the thing and smashes it from behind.
Ceiling Dreams (4:40:38 PM): </Riley>
Ceiling Dreams (4:40:41 PM): <Judgement>
Ceiling Dreams (4:43:47 PM): An interesting round this is.
Ceiling Dreams (4:44:39 PM): Rage rushes off and jumps off the rubber ropes.. but notices that the Rioru isn't where it was before. What happened?
Ceiling Dreams (4:44:43 PM): Oh yeah.
Ceiling Dreams (4:45:55 PM): Apparently, word got out that height advantage gave +30 evasion. Definitely a hax. Regardless, Bigby is on one of the poles before jumping off at the incoming airborn pig monkey and slamming it with a force exert!
Ceiling Dreams (4:46:52 PM): They're both near a corner and now they're both smacking the hell out of each other. At that range, Rioru can't get in a proper quick attack whilst Mankey can't get behind Rioru!
Ceiling Dreams (4:46:58 PM): </end Round>
Ceiling Dreams (4:47:03 PM): <Positions/Status>
Ceiling Dreams (4:48:03 PM): They're both up close and personal, with Mankey's back towards the pole. Rage isn't feeling all too well from being slammed into the ground by a force exert, and is actually feeling a little stiff in its lower body.
Ceiling Dreams (4:48:41 PM): He's holding on but we don't know for how long. Rioru on the other hand is a little better off then his fighting brother, and is throwing in those shots one after another.
Ceiling Dreams (4:48:47 PM): </end>
Ceiling Dreams (4:48:56 PM): <continue>
Ceiling Dreams (4:57:06 PM): "Rage!" Riley calls out, air-boxing in his excitement, "Let's knock him back with our secret weapon! Use Reversal to knock 'im back, and if he comes back for more Counter his attacks!"
Ceiling Dreams (4:57:27 PM): Mankey nods, letting loose a power burst of energy, drawing energy from the wounds all over its body. It then lies in wait, intercepting incoming bloews with a counter attack.
Ceiling Dreams (4:57:30 PM): </Riley>
Ceiling Dreams (4:58:05 PM): *Bigby sent off another two force exert punches into the mankeys face and back off bobbing and weaving to avoid any attacks from the mankey and countering with short kicks
Ceiling Dreams (4:58:13 PM): punches as he kept moving about the ring.*
Ceiling Dreams (4:58:21 PM): </Abel>
Ceiling Dreams (4:59:02 PM): <Judgement>
(5:00:14 PM) BanovG2 has left the room.
Ceiling Dreams (5:00:37 PM): .. This is rather unexpected. Bigby rushes in for a force exert to the face but is suddenly caught up in a super powered reversal! His arm gets caught by the raging Mankey and they end up in a roll..
Ceiling Dreams (5:00:59 PM): And the blue fighting pokemon is swiftly thrown into the corner and is thus knocked out.
Ceiling Dreams (5:01:13 PM): The Battle is Over!
TheDeathWishKing (5:01:18 PM): O-O
Ceiling Dreams (5:01:22 PM): The Winner is.. Riley and Mankey!

Joe was losing his cool. This opponent was stronger than he thought. "Pikachu, use thunderbolt!"The yellow mouse gave a hesitant nod as he raised his tail, flashing with yellow sparks before launching a massive ray of lighting at its foe.
Rebecca's PM said:
Rebecca saw her advantage and continued to press it. "Bulbasaur, lasso it up with your vine whip and throw it into the water!"With a chipper grunt the grass dino sent green vines whipping at pikachu, binding it and throwing it towards the nearby lake.
