All pokemon who participate in a winning fight against another trainer, NPC or not, gain 2 exp points. If a battle against another trainer is lost or comes to a tie, then only 1 exp point is awarded. When fighting wild pokemon, no exp is awarded. This is to avoid exploits where one might produce an extremely high number of random encounters to quickly level himself.
Every exp point your pokemon earns is also required to be recorded in your profile, beside each pokemon's name and level. How much exp your pokemon has determines what level it is at. Below is the official guide for how much exp is required to reach the next level.
To reach levels 2-15, 1 exp point is required. To reach levels 16-30, 2 exp points are required. To reach levels 31-45, 3 exp points are required. To reach levels 46-60, 4 exp points are required. To reach levels 61-90, 6 exp points are required. To reach levels 91-100, 8 exp points are required.
For example: A pokemon with 26 experience points would be at level 21, with 2 more exp points to reach level 22.
