Welcome to the forums! As somebody just starting out, there are a few hurdles to cross before you can begin playing.
1- Post a Bio in the Character Profiles Board
You should create a character and post a topic about them in the Character Profiles Forum. Your profile should include, bare minimum, the character's
1) Name,
2) Gender,
3) Age,
4) Appearance (1-2 paragraphs),
5) Personality (2+ paragraphs),
6) Biography (2+ paragraphs)
Luckily, there are many existing profiles you can use as a template for your own.
Interesting characters have distinct personalities, likes and dislikes-- strengths AND weaknesses, too. When making a character be mindful of these things. Other members are free to reply to profile topics and make comments on the character, and you should always be mindful of the feedback you get! Our goal is to have many well-developed, interesting characters interacting.
2- Decide Your Starting Pokemon
This is a pokemon roleplay, so of course you're going to have pokemon. You may start with 1-2 pokemon, no more than that. Although your character may be an 'established' trainer, all pokemon you start with and every new pokemon you catch hereon out begin at level one.
It is possible to start with an evolved pokemon, but only in special cases. If the pokemon in questions has only two different stages of evolution, like Snorlax, Armadlo, Primeape, Omastar, Kabutops, Scizor, etc, then they must start at their earlier stage evolution. For pokemon with 3 stages of evolution, however, such as the starters, Gengar, Golem, Machamp, Alakazam, etc, you are allowed to have them start at their second stage of evolution if wanted.
However, if the 3-stage pokemon in question does not reach its second stage before level 30, they must start at their earliest stage of evolution.
There are some special cases in which a pokemon evolves in the game by specific requirements such as trade with an item or level-up with a certain attack. For these cases, look at the seperate 'Evolution Guide.'
Aside from these rules of evolution, any line of pokemon may be started with except for the following:
Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Mewtwo, Mew, Raikou, Entei, Suicune, Lugia, Ho-Oh, Celebi, Regirock, Regice, Registeel, Latias, Latios, Kyogre, Groudon, Rayquaza, Jirachi, Deoxys (Any form), Uxie, Mesprit, Azelf, Dialga, Palkia, Heatran, Regigigas, Giratina, Crecelia, Phione, Manaphy, Darkrai, Shaymin, Arseus
...In other words, no legendaries.
3- Set Up Your Pokemon
The last section of your character profile should be devoted to your pokemon. List each pokemon you own, including their...
1) Specie Name
2) Nickname (if applicable)
3) Gender
4) Level
5) EXP
6) TMs
7) 1-2 paragraphs that describe their background with the trainer and their personality.
Each pokemon starts with 0 exp at level 1. Be sure keep this information UP TO DATE as your pokemon gain experience and level up. A starter pokemon or newly caught pokemon will have no TMs, but at certain levels you will be given the opportunity to teach one. See "Movepool and Move Expansion."
4- Introduce Yourself!
Not entirely necessary, but we'd all like to know who you are. Post in the introduction thread so we can all get to know you a little bit, and you can learn about the existing players, too.
5- Start Roleplaying, and Catch More Pokemon!
You're now free to enter roleplays and start new ones. Be mindful of basic etiquette and have fun!
You'll be able to have up to 6 pokemon on you at a time, so be mindful of this. You can catch pokemon in the wild in any roleplay you want; however, pokemon you catch follow the same rules as ones you start out with, so only certain levels of evolution and such are allowed.
The process of capturing a new pokemon will be detailed in another topic.
