Razek and I were sitting around and decided this ought to be revived for another go. We miss the good ol' days of RPing, and hopefully this time we'll have a good run!
The actual details of how we're going to do this are very unclear. I still offer my services as a DM, with a few extra years of experience behind me. We can try self-modding but it doesn't really sit well with me =/
Discuss. Let's get some ideas flowing, figure out how this is going to work. We want this to happen!

you can only read the old rp so many times to where you want to play again

I agree. I mean, I just got through 117 pages of Ashes to Items, and I want nothing more than to role play something again.
Though, admittedly, I don't have any ideas for how this is going to work, either.
Maybe we could go over the pros and cons of both DMing and self-modding?

If we self-mod, there won't really be any cohesive story and fights will all be super-fabricated. DMs allow a single story we can all follow, but are also difficult to maintain because it depends on a DM. Self-modding lets us act whenever we want whether or not others are around to join in.
I've got a proposition; we self-mod, but keep it small. Rather than focus on epic stories, a couple of us can get together in a topic each and just do one-on-one roleplays with self-modding; easy to control and move, no singular DM to depend on.
Of course you can roleplay in lots of different topics at once, and you can include more people in a topic, but I feel that in larger groups it'll be harder to move as one, as people might leave for a week or something. A simple back-and-forth will be relatively painless.
Proposed Battle System And for battles, I think we should bring in the battle system from this other really good RP forum that died, called 'Subartica.' There are the two participants and the 'Judge.' In the case of a player fighting an NPC, the 'Judge' controls the NPC. Anybody can volunteer to be the 'judge' for a fight (or, we can have designated judges, but I feel we're all pretty capable.)
The 'judge' will start a new topic specifically for the battle; the first post would contain information about the arena, and the participating trainers and pokemon (we might decide move restrictions, those would be outlined there too).
Each trainer PMs the judge with their command and a description of the attack. When the judge has received both PMs, s/he will make a post in the topic that 1) quotes both commands and 2) describes their outcome, followed by a description of each pokemon's health and position. The judge is the only one to post, and the topic will just be a string of posts that describe the unfolding fight.
Example:
A typical fight might last 4 or 5 rounds. The actual specifics, like move restrictions and prizes, can be figured next, but does that sound reasonable?

I'm assuming then that everyone's good with my proposed system =.=
Which is good.
Now, specifics about battle...
I say that we start with and only capture pokemon at level one. We can make an easy growth system based on winning or losing battles. I'd go with 2 exp for a win, and 1 exp for a loss or tie. Have level 1-15 level up by 1 exp point, 16-30 by 2 exp points, and so on. Information about each pokemon's level and exp would be in your character profile, and has to be constantly maintained by you for accuracy.
Levels shouldn't affect battling power too much, but maybe we can put move restrictions based on levels. Here's how it went for Subartica, which had, again, a pretty awesome battling system:
I think it's an awesome set-up. In Subartica the levels needed a lot more exp for each successive level, but when it died nobody was higher than like, level 10. This way I think we can reach pretty decent levels pretty quickly.
If this sounds good, then I can make a few topics that outline all these specific rules and we can make rules about character bios, then start getting in characters and playing!
EDIT (June 29) made some changes with TMs. Come on, people, approve it so we can move on and play =p

I edited the above post for some TM inclusion. I've also worked on and have a good character to use once we get rolling, but you guys need to give some kind of seal of approval so we can move on and start playing.

I see no problem with the specifics.

Awesome! You know, I'm just going to go ahead and make these official rules in the Rules forum and get my new biography up, eh? If anyone has any dispute about the rules I can always go back and edit 'em.
ALLRIGHTY! Let's get going.

It's interesting to see where this goes. It's been a while since I've RP'd, anyways. It'll be fun, perhaps.

So what are the rules for battling an NPC? Are we still limited to two moves per battle?

I made a topic in the rules about that. But for the record, yes, you're still limited by your current movepool. The number of attacks you can use and their power will grow as your pokemon levels up, though.
